Flexible Schedule the Key to a Happy Marriage?

One of the great parts about working at home is that I can be here for my daughter on a regular basis. I’m here when she wakes up in the morning and I’m here when she comes home from school. There are other benefits from this flexible schedule – that benefit is the ability to support my husband’s more rigid schedule. I will not say his is more demanding nor that he works harder than I do – but he has fewer options.

Flexible Scheduling

For my husband, the work day must begin no later than 9 a.m. and it’s extremely common for him to be at work until 6 p.m. in the evening. Because my schedule is more flexible, I can work in the morning from about 4 a.m. until 6:30 or so – then I help my daughter get ready for school and often have breakfast or at least coffee with my husband before he leaves for work. Once they are both off for their days, I dive back into my schedule here.

I can balance my workload against my housework and my husband and I split a great deal of it up. The heavy cleaning loads – like yard work and deep cleaning we divvy up over the weekend. The rest of the work we take care of during the week, including laundry. I may wash a few loads and fold them up or hang them up in the laundry room. When he gets home, he’ll take the now cleaned laundry and put it away.

Eating Together

The flexibility of my work schedule means that we can share meals together more often than not. There have been times when I have received job offers that would put me in a more rigid daily schedule, but I’ve discovered that even should the jobs provide us with more income, it would require the sacrifice of time together and time with our daughter.

Is a flexible schedule a key to a happy marriage? For us, yes – it is definitely a component of it.
