Food Tips and Kitchen Hints for September

Last month, I began collecting hints and tips that I thought were great and highly useful in the kitchen. Here is my latest edition of hints, tips and tricks in the kitchen.

For an elegant decoration on frosted cakes or brownies. . .

Take a chocolate bar and use a vegetable peel to shave off the tip. The result will be super easy chocolate curls that make you look like you’re a pro!

Chilling Beverages for a Party

When I heard about this I thought it was ingenious. Unfortunately we don’t have a washing machine. . .but if you’re hosting a fall party try this one out! To keep beverages cold but to have plenty of space, fill your washing machine with ice and then stick the beverages inside. When the party is over and the ice has melted, you can easily select the rinse cycle and then the water will all drain out.

Mixed Spice Shakers

Buy empty spice jars with either a seive cover or a small slotted cover. Inside make your own cinnamon sugar or your own salt and pepper mixture to throw into recipes.

Space Saving Vegetable Prep

Sometimes, when you have a recipe that calls for different vegetables at various stages of cooking, adding them can get tricky and space consuming. Instead of storing veggies in food prep bowls, use one large salad bowl and separate the layers of vegetables with plastic wrap. Make sure you put the ingredients that you’ll need in the recipe first, into the bowl last so those vegetables are the top layer.

Heating Dinner Plates

For a fancier dinner party affair, heated plates are a special touch. Try heating them in the dry cycle of the dishwasher!

Raising Bread Dough

In our house, finding a draftless, warm and humid place where I can let bread dough rise is tricky. So I started sticking bread dough in the turned off oven. Then I got even smarter. Put a pan of boiling water to add to the humidity in the environment. This should create perfectly risen bread dough every time!
