For Work-at-Home-Moms, School is a Good Thing

I’m happy to say that school has officially begun. In many parts of the country, kids have been back to the ritual of study, recess, and fun with friends for almost a month now. For my daughter, it’s been just under two weeks, and for me, summer couldn’t have ended fast enough. My daughter just started first grade, and in my town, kindergarten is only two and a half hours long. So, I’ve actually been looking forward to this day – the day she begins attending school full-time.

As a mom, I hate admitting that I am thankful when my daughter goes off to school for the day. However, as a mom working from home, back-to-school means I’ll have more time for my home business during the day. Like me, most moms working a home biz are trying to earn money so they have the opportunity to stay home and be the one to raise their children. It’s a grand concept, but what is often overlooked is the work involved in running a business while raising children at the same time. Mothering alone is a full-time job!

I am like many moms, and have another small child at home who isn’t old enough for school yet. She is old enough for preschool, though after going through a recent move, she has put potty training on the back burner. However, I suspect that moms in the same situation as I will agree that having one child at home while trying to work is infinitely easier than two children. Less arguing, less responding to demands of “I want, I need,” and more of our energy to focus on our businesses.

For you work-at-home-moms who have all their children in school, congratulations! You now have five or so more hours per day to contribute to growing your business and marketing your skills. Make the most of the quiet time, and don’t feel too guilty that you’re actually excited to see your kids off to school in the morning.
