Found Style

You may be wondering what exactly “found style” means. Well, it’s pretty simple. It means you have developed your own style from found items, and it usually refers to items that cost little or nothing. Someone may have given you a great piece of furniture or artwork that he or she no longer uses, or you may have found a great accessory in the attic although you are not quite sure where it originated. Interesting items like these often provide great inspiration for the rest of the space.

You may also find great pieces in salvage centers or thrift stores, that you can purchase for pennies on the dollar of their original worth, and make into great items for your home. One example is a piece of iron scrollwork from an old gate. Something like this can be turned into a terrific piece of wall art, either in the home or outdoors in the garden. Another is a great picture frame. You may not love the artwork inside, but the frame may be perfect for one of your favorite pieces.

Some people also like to trade furnishings. You might trade with a friend or family member or you might make an even swap with an antique dealer or the proprietor of a thrift shop or salvage center. This is a great way to get rid of things you don’t need, use, or like any more, and to gather new things to change the look of your home.

Some found items will need some work, a little freshening up with paint, or simply a good cleaning, while others work perfect as is. The distressed look may not be something you thought of as fitting in with your existing decor, but you might be surprised. There are many unique items from which to choose. In fact, many homeowners have created art and accessories from things they did not even recognize.

Even if you don’t know the intended purpose of an item, you can transform it into something interesting for your home. Look at every object with “fresh eyes” and imagine how it could work with the rest of your decor.
