One of my favorite scrapbooks of all time was given to me by my best friend the day before I flew from my life-long home in Hawaii to my new dorm room in Wisconsin. I was 18 years old and excited to be entering a chapter in my life, but sad to be away from my companion of more than a decade.
The memory album was filled with photos of us from elementary, middle and high school. Halloweens spent trick-or-treating for full-size Snickers Bars in matching clown costumes all the way to commencement day when we bid good-bye to fifth periods spent sneaking off campus to McDonalds and decorating the hallways as Homecoming co-chairs.
In addition to the photos, childhood mementos, and darling embellishments, my friend dedicated an entire layout to our favorite inspirational quotes. In the past, I had seen memory books that featured quotes, song lyrics and jokes as page borders or titles, but my friend took it to another level, by creating scrapbook paper with our favorite phrases, such as:
“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same. “–Flavia
“The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.” –Elisabeth Foley
“Education is the power to think clearly, the power to act well in the world’s work, and the power to appreciate life.” –Brigham Young
“The language of friendship is not words but meanings.”–Henry David Thoreau
“May the sun shine, all day long, everything go right, and nothing wrong. May those you love bring love back to you, and may all the wishes you wish come true!”–Irish Blessing
It’s been nearly 20 years since I left home with that scrapbook tucked into my carry-on. I’ve moved seven times since graduating college and the book has stayed with me the entire time. Whenever I get lonely or homesick I open it up, look at the photos, read the inspirational sayings and thank Heaven that I am blessed with such a wonderful best friend.
