From creams to lotions, “body butter” to cleaning potions, there is certainly a l of expensive options out there when it comes to your hands. But of course you know what is coming next, don’t you? This is the Frugal Blog, so naturally I have some thrifty options for beautiful hands.
Many of these ideas have been past down generation by generation, long before the birth of places such as The Body Shop or even Avon. Did you know that the very first hand lotion that we know of dates back to 2 A.D.? It was made of sheep or cattle fat, pig fat and potato starch!
But don’t worry, for these recipes, you won’t need any sheet, cattle or pig fat.
To moisturize your hands, rub them with honey. An added benefit of the honey is that is is has some natural antibacterial properties; this is a good thing if you have fissures and cracks in your hands. And you don’t have to stay sticky. Just wash your hands with a mild soap.
If your skin is really cracked, try soaking a cloth in vinegar and then using it to wrap your hands. Keep the wrap on for 20 to 30 minutes. It is a good excuse to put your feet up and relax.
Egg whites will condition your hands and leave them looking younger. Massage them in and then wash off.
Olive oil is wonderful for leaving your hands ever so soft. Rub the oil in and allow it to set in for at least 20 minutes before washing your hands.
Just before bed, rub some shortening on your hands and cover them with cotton gloves or socks. Remove the gloves or socks in the morning, and your hands will as soft as baby skin. You can try this trick with vaseline as well. Just make sure the gloves or socks are made of cotton so your skin can breathe overnight.
