Fun and Festive Layouts

Aren’t all scrapbook layouts fun and festive? After looking at a rather dreary black-and-white New Year’s Eve page design at my local scrapbook supply shop, I’d say the answer is a resounding “no.”

Obviously, if you are creating a layout as a tribute to a deceased loved one or you’re commemorating a somber occasion, the words “fun” and “festive” are not going to be the first that come to mind. However, when you are designing a layout celebrating New Year’s Eve, a holiday that is ripe with family, food and fun moments, you wouldn’t aim to have it look like the outside of a hearse.

While black and white are very popular color choices for New Year’s Eve scrapbook pages, the stark color choices are usually reserved as a backdrop to bright accents or festive patterned paper, which includes glitter, flocking or eye-popping confetti. Even if you don’t like too many embellishments on your page, you could add touches of gold or silver to break up the black and white monotony.

I once used plain black paper for a birthday scrapbook page, but I added felt flowers, sparkling rhinestone brads, and pretty patterned ribbons, so it wouldn’t look so morbid.

Another way to add color to your layouts is to add quotes. However, instead of printing them in black ink, use festive colored ink instead. You could also accent your favorite quotes with stickers or rub-ons. This is especially true for New Year’s Eve layouts. Some noteworthy quotes to spice up a holiday page include:

“An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” –Bill Vaughan

“New Year’s Day is every man’s birthday.” –Charles Lamb

“Let us not drink to the past, but to the future.” –Anonymous

Whether you are ringing in the New Year with a quiet celebration or you are rocking the house with a big bash, make sure you preserve your memories in a way that promotes positivity.
