Fun With Food

So this isn’t really a craft per se, but food can be fun and crafty as well! Everyone has things they like to make for holidays or get togethers. Here are two that I’ve recently made that are just fun, to make, to eat and to look at!

First, we celebrated National Jello Week at work with, what else, a Jello potluck. You would be amazed at the number of things people can do with Jello. I took the easy route and made something easy and pretty to  look at, It’s called broken glass jello cake and it’s really simple. 4 small boxes of jello- I used lime, blue raspberry, orange and strawberry. You could use all of one color, like all reds and pinks for Valentines Day or red and green for Christmas.

Mix each box of Jello with one cup boiling water- like making jigglers, pour into 8×10 pans and refrigerate overnight. I also used some bowls, just to shake things up!

Cut all the jello into squares and rectangles of various sizes. Trust me, the more varied they are the prettier your cake will be. Put all cubes in a 9×13 pan.

Mix two envelopes Knox unflavored gelatin with 1/2 c water, wait one minute, stir in 1 1/2 c boiling water. Stir well then mix in one can of sweetened condensed milk. Let cool. Be patient and really let this cool otherwise you will melt all  of your pretty jello squares. Once it’s cool pour it over your Jello cubes and refrigerate overnight.

Milk with Jello? Trust me, it’s worth a try.

The other fun thing is Oreo truffle balls. Not quite as much work as cake pops but the same basic idea.

Crush one package of golden Oreo’s in a food processor or a Ziploc bag with a rolling pin. Mix in 8oz of softened cream cheese and several drops of red food coloring. Roll into one inch balls, dip in melted chocolate, cool on wax paper.

I use plastic forks with the center tines broken off to pick up the coated balls from the chocolate.

You can melt white chocolate and drizzle on your truffles or leave them plain. Fun desserts for Valentines Day and the kids can help. You can also use regular Oreo’s I used the golden ones so I could add food coloring.
