Fuss or Not?

It’s that time of year here where the weather keeps changing. One day it is beautiful and he next cold and windy. Sometimes it changes even within the one day. Sunday morning when we went to church it was brilliantly sunny and we expected a warm day exactly like the day before. By the time we came out of church it was cold and windy. Many people seem to be struggling with colds and largely because their bodies can’t adjust fast enough to the changes in weather patterns. I’ve been one of them. I’ve been battling cold and flu symptoms for a couple of weeks.

It’s meant Mick and I haven’t been able to do some of the things we normally do in our week or some of the things e had planned. I’m very thankful as he’s made sure I take needed medication and generally taken over doing some things around the house leaving me to rest and try and recover. He also understands when I am not well, I tend to get crabby and so he cuts me a bit of slack.

Things are different, I’ve found, when he is sick. Some men like to be fussed over and pampered when they’re not well. Mick is not one of them. He hates being fussed over. It’s the quickest way to annoy him. He’d rather be left alone. He’s best trying to sleep it off, something I struggle to do at any time, and let nature take its course. The other thing he does is sit in a comfy chair and watch DVDs. I’ve learned it‘s better to let him be and just pop in and out occasionally asking if he needs a drink or medication or anything rather than hover over him.

What’s most important is finding out what works best with your spouse, and how best to deal with them. Sometimes you will only learn this by trial and error. Once you know what they prefer, it’s better to fit in with that instead of trying to change them.
