Game Day Fun For Kids

The countdown to Super Bowl XLIV continues this weekend. We’ve been invited to a viewing party, but I know my 5-year-old will be bored to death, so we’re headed to a sledding party instead. However, not everyone has the same options we do.

If you’re planning to cheer on your favorite team this weekend with a bunch of family and friends, don’t forget the kids. Younger children in particular may not share the same enthusiasm for sitting in front of a big screen TV watching grown men slam into each other while chasing a small ball.

If young ones are headed to your home with their parents for the big games, then consider the following kid-friendly activities to keep them happy:

HOMEMADE NOISE MAKERS

Gather some clean recyclable containers, such as water bottles, soda bottles or yogurt containers and have kids add rice, dry beans, beads, or jingle bells to them. Next, seal and decorate the containers with colored duct tape, electrical tape and stickers. You can use duct tape in the color of your favorite team or have the kids use clear tape to adhere football trading cards to the outside of the containers to make them more festive. Other decorative touches include dot paint, markers, football stickers or glitter.

GAME DAY PARTY FAVORS

Put your young guests to work by having them make party favors for all the guests. On a large table set out stadium cups and have the children fill each cup with sports related items, such as: Stickers, candy, football-shape chocolate, fruit snacks, football trading cards, mini bottles of Gatorade, wristbands, power bars, sunflower seeds, chewing gum, football pencils and erasers, etc.

PIN THE FOOTBALL ON THE PLAYER

On a large piece of poster board draw the head and torso of a football player with outstretched arms.

Make two small holes in the top corners of the poster board. Then, fashion a hanger by threading a cord through the holes and knotting the ends. Hang the poster board in an open space.

Use brown construction paper to make as many footballs as you have children playing the game.

Place double stick tape on each construction paper football.

One at a time, blindfold the kids and see who can stick the ball onto the receiver’s hands.
