Gardening in the City

Many people in the suburbs or in rural areas enjoy gardening as a hobby. Additionally, some people simply prefer the wonderful taste of fresh foods on the dinner table, therefore growing their favorite fruits and vegetables. However, gardening is not just a way to beautify your yard or feed yourself but it has also been proven an extremely effective stress reducer.

For people living in the big city, gardening is out of their reach. However, the good news is that these people also have gardening options available. The first option for city gardening is to grow your flowers or vegetables in beds or pots at home. This is a particularly good option if you have a patio or small yard, but if you do not you can use windowsill, planting box.

The biggest difficulty in gardening in the city is ensuring an adequate supply of sunlight, especially if you live on a block surrounded by apartment buildings. However, direct sunlight is not always necessary. In fact, many plants can thrive in an area with a high ambient light level. If things are dark around your home, you may want to consider using a sun lamp for a few hours each day.

Gardeners in the city might also consider finding a place where they can start a community garden or city farm. These gardens are generally operated by volunteers, using a small, rented piece of property to grow the garden. Some community garden programs even include instruction courses so you can learn how to have a healthy and thriving garden. Therefore, if you live in the city, do not think that you cannot take up gardening as a hobby or necessity of life. While it may require a bit more creativity and imagination, city gardening can be a rewarding and a stress-reducing hobby.
