Genealogy and Physical Resemblance

The other day, I decided to look at a free genealogy web site that I had not yet visited. MyHeritage.com is a web site where you can create a family tree and do other family history research. The thing that grabbed my attention right away was not a family tree or ancestor locating resource, though. Myheritage.com has a fun genealogy toy, um, I mean tool – the look-alike meter. As I read about the look-alike meter, I was excited but skeptical. Supposedly, you can go to the web site, become a member (for free), and then upload family photos into the look-alike meter, which uses face recognition technology to provide an answer to the question that is on every new parent’s mind – does baby look more like mommy or like daddy?

As the mother of an eight and a half month old baby whom everyone thinks looks just like his daddy, I could not resist giving the look-alike meter a try. Sure, the web site also has a feature where you can see which celebrities you look like, but I’m more interested in whether face recognition technology can find any similar features between me and my pint-sized “celebrity” who is so cute and charming that he really does attract a crowd wherever we go.

In the interest of full disclosure, I feel that I must mention that the web site has “offers” that you must skip through in order to view your look-alike meter results. I was able to skip the offers quickly without participating in any of them, so in my opinion it is merely a minor annoyance.

I uploaded a picture of myself, a picture of my husband, and a picture of my son. According to the look-alike meter, my son looks 3% more like me than my husband. This is very interesting considering that nearly everyone that we see remarks that he is a miniature version of his daddy. I feel honored that, at least according to face recognition technology, I am responsible for some of my adorable little guy’s, well, adorableness.

Whom do your children resemble more?
