Genealogy Fun With The Kids

Are your kids having trouble finding things to do during winter break? If all of the Christmas toys and freshly fallen snow are unable to provide enough entertainment, why not get them into a genealogy project or two. Even something as simple as sitting down with old photo albums and some refreshments can be a memorable experience, especially since kids tend to say what is on their minds. Get ready for some laughs as they ask you (in their own, uninhibited words) why Grandma is wearing “that hideous outfit”, why Great-Grandpa grew his beard so long, and who is that “awkward looking kid”.

You could also find and print a pedigree chart and fill it out with your children. There are many enticing designs online, and some of them are free. This activity works best if you know most of the information that you will need, as the kids may not want to accompany you on a research excursion to the library. Of course if they are inclined to take on the role of “genealogy explorer” and venture to the library with you to learn how to do the research, that is great and should by all means be encouraged. A pedigree chart is a great way to teach children the “who’s who” of your family and how they are connected to each of the individuals on the chart.

If your kids love creative activities, why not get them started on a family scrapbook. With a few supplies and their imagination, they can make a family treasure that can be shared with present and future generations. If they love to use the computer, they could even make an online scrapbook. Winter weather may keep your kids indoors for part of their winter break, but with a little encouragement from you, they could have a great time learning about their family history.
