When the weather outside is frightfully cold, it greatly limits the kinds of activities that one can partake in, to pass the time. Not only will it be incredibly uncomfortable for a person to do anything outdoors in freezing temperatures, it can also be quite dangerous! Fortunately, genealogy is the perfect hobby to work on when it is really cold outside.
Cold, wintery, weather makes a lot of people want to stay home and hibernate. It makes people want to crawl under blankets, to light fires in their fireplaces, or to heat their homes with space heaters. Many people will find that they cannot do their favorite outdoor activities until summer returns again.
Fortunately, genealogy is the perfect cold weather hobby. You can do a lot of your genealogy research from the comfort and warmth of your very own home. There are a lot of genealogy websites that you can search through online. It’s time to start putting together that fancy version of your family tree that you have been trying to find the time to create. Got a box of old family photos that you have been meaning to sort through? Now is the time! When the weather is this cold, no one is going to invite you to a day at the beach, or to go for a walk or a bike ride through the park. For once, your family will not complain when you decide to spend the day indoors, working on genealogy!
Cold weather is the perfect time to get in touch with your living relatives. After all, they are probably at home, trying to stay warm, just like you are! Call your grandparents, and ask them to tell you stories from when they were children. Ask questions, and take notes. This is a great time to collect family history.
Get on Facebook, post those old family photos, and share them with your family members who are also on Facebook. You can tag your relatives in the photos they appear in. Ask your relatives if they can identify the people in the photographs who you don’t recognize. It doesn’t take long for most people to get bored when the weather is terrible, and they cannot leave the house. You can entertain your relatives and give them something to do, by asking them questions about these photographs. You don’t have to tell them that what they are doing is, actually, genealogy research!
