General Conference: “Divorce”

In his talk “Divorce” Elder Dallin H Oaks speaks about how divorce has affected the members of the church. He speaks to those who have been divorced, then to those who may be considering divorce and to those who are contemplating getting married. Elder Oaks emphasizes the importance of eternal marriage the commitments that you make when you enter into these covenants.

Elder Oaks opens his talk by pointing out how commonplace divorce has become in the world. He laments the fact that divorces have become so common. He points out that people look at marriage as a contract that can easily be broken, without it affecting others. He also points out that many of the younger people choose to not get married at all, because they look marriage as a burden.

Elder Oaks then speaks to those members who are divorced. Elder Oaks acknowledges that many members have spouses who have abandoned the covenants that they have made. He points out that divorce allows these members to end their marriages and start over again.

Elder Oaks then speaks to those people who may be considering divorce. He points out that repentance should be tried before contemplating divorce. Elder Oaks points out that divorce also affects the children, and can aggravate the difficulties that you have in getting along with each other. Additionally it is important to realize that you need to work on your marriage, and being best friends. You will only stay in love with each other as you nurture your relationship. You should take time to counsel with your bishop if you are considering divorce.

Finally Elder Oaks speaks to those who are contemplating getting married. He points out that the best way to avoid divorce is to marry someone who will treat you the right way. It is important to take the time to really get to know your future spouse and his family. You will not find someone who is perfect, but he should be working towards perfection. You can work together in this goal.
