Get Inspired

I hear a lot of people say that they aren’t really too concerned with style and decor. They are more concerned with everyday function. “As long as the house is neat, and everything works okay, I’m happy.”

Well, if you are one of those people, I say it’s time to get inspired. Function is important, but a marriage of function and style is even better. I think that many people who say they don’t care about style, simply don’t really know what style they like. That’s okay.

Even if a person can’t tell the difference between contemporary and country, retro and rustic, he or she can still express a sense of style. No one has to be a design aficionado in order to create a put together space.

Good design is really about bringing together things you love. It’s about combining elements of style, taste, function, and comfort to achieve a cozy, homey atmosphere that your entire family finds relaxing.

Doing so isn’t nearly as difficult as it might seem. It starts with inspiration. To create a unique and beautiful room, all you have to do is find a piece of art, a print, a painting, a tapestry, a fabric, an accessory, or a piece of furniture that you absolutely love, and build from there. Bring in other furnishings, accessories, and treatments that draw from your inspiration piece.

Draw from the colors, the texture, or the lines of your favorite piece and repeat these elements throughout the space. As long as your furniture is of similar scale, and you find or create common elements to tie everything together, you can make the pieces you love work together. Try painting furniture all one color or upholstering or slip covering mismatched sofas and chairs in the same fabrics to tie them together.

You can make things work with a little inspiration.
