Getting Dad Involved in Scrapbooking

A few of you responded to my blog: “Do Dads Scrapbook?” Apparently, guys are okay with memory book making, but don’t expect them to craft layouts on a regular basis.

So how do you get dad more involved in scrapbooking? According to one reader, you should partner them with a child and have them create a father/son or father/daughter scrapbook. The project can be as simple or elaborate as you choose depending on the age and skill of the father/child team.

Fortunately, there are a slew of scrapbook materials that feature a father-theme. For example, you can purchase a variety of acid and lignen free scrapbook paper that comes pre-printed with dad-themed phrases, such as:

My Dad, My Hero

World’s Best Father

Daddy & Me

A Father’s Love

Fathers like you are precious and few.

A father is someone you look up to no matter how tall you grow.

Another option is to simply come up with your own list of words or phrases that describe dear old dad, such as:

Patient and understanding

Mentor and friend

Stepping stones of life

Solid as a rock

Inspiration for layouts can come from dad or child. Focus on hobbies or activities that both family members enjoy doing together. For example:

Sports: Basketball, football or golf are popular options. For a football-themed layout purchase a sticker goal post and hang your page title like a banner between the posts. For golf nut dads use a grass paper background and cut out a piece of sandpaper for a trap.

Fishing: Use water scrapbook paper for your background and add a boat which can also serve as a journaling block.

Woodworking: Find wood grain scrapbook paper and sandpaper to serve as backdrops for photos of father and son crafting items out of wood.

Cars: Embellish the page with stickers and stamps of dad’s favorite vehicles.

Camping: Use die cut tents and add photos of a recent camping trip.

What are some of your favorite dad/child layout themes?
