Getting Things Going Again after a Stall

Sometimes, we hit a road block. Things stall or even come to what seems like a complete stop. It can seem incredibly daunting to try to get things going again after such a lull—especially for a single parent. Getting motivated and finding our way out of a situation that has come to a standstill isn’t easy—but it is entirely possible!

I do not know how many times I have been humming along in life and suddenly everything changes. Sometimes, it is a gradually slowing down but often times I just hit a roadblock whether at work, with family or in my personal life and I feel as though I am stuck; I’m going nowhere! Getting things started again can be a big challenge. The thing is, sometimes we need to be stuck for a while and trying to force it into high gear before it is time can just make it worse. I have learned that sometimes I have to take it slow and feel my way until I get back on my feet again.

Take stock in where you are and try to figure out what is going on for you. You may not be able to know exactly why you are stalled or stuck, but you may be able to identify some of the “themes” that are going on in your world. Maybe you are stuck at work because it is time to make a change? Maybe it is something as simple as the weather or a change in the seasons? Other times, there may be important lessons you are meant to learn before you can move on. Have faith and confidence in the process and try to accept. I find that I have to accept where I am before I can start making the changes necessary to move on.

Look for support and encouragement around you. Having a good friend to talk to can be the best thing in the world! Someone who will give us that needed nudge or kick or different perspective can be invaluable. You can also try some great techniques that work well in my writing work for getting un-stuck that can help in other life areas too: write a journal, paint a picture, go for a walk, take a short trip—shaking up your environment and trying to document your life as it is can help you see how to move out of the maze of being stalled.
