Gift Idea: HABA Sorter Box

When it comes to toys I am old school. I love the wooden toys that inspire a sense of nostalgia. Yes, I love gadgets and technology and implore its use in my life and the lives of my children. I never think technology should come before creativity or individuality. Technology should work for you and not take you into bondage. It is so easy to allow a nifty new gadget or lights and sounds toy to do all the thinking for you, but is that our goal? Is the goal to be entertained or to explore? Should we keep busy by becoming dependent on the lights and sounds to tell us when to press the next button or keep busy by our own minds? For these reasons I always like to have a healthy supply of toys that do not require batteries. HABA toys have a wonderful selection of toys that spark the creativity button in your child rather than spark your child to hit a button on the toy.

One such wooden toy is HABA’s sorting box Animals. I love watching a baby use a sorting box for the first few times. The look of wonder and curiosity are just precious. Once the child knows where the square goes and the circle goes then she quickly looses interest and moves on. HABA’s sorting box Animals is unique in that it continues to interest the child because of the different animal scenes that come with the toy. The toy comes with two birch plywood templates which have a different scene on each side. The templates fit easily into the main box along with the sorting blocks. The sorting blocks are also colored and have different pictures to match the different scenes. The child can match the shapes by inserting them in the sorting box and also match the right side of the block to match the template like a puzzle. This is a toy that will engage a child on many levels making it a great buy for longevity.
