Gifts from the Garden- Part 2

Most people love fresh herbs. Why not give a pot of fresh herbs to someone this Christmas? Of course if you can take a piece of an established plants but one that has roots is even better.

You might want to give a selection of herbs like mint, parsley, chives, etc. Basil, sage, thyme, tarragon, and rosemary are other herbs you might want to consider including in your gift. Parsley and mint are great herbs. We have both growing. Both are from rooted plants from our previous house. The parsley is right near our back door on the back patio area which I was thankful for yesterday since it was pelting with rain as it was make rissoles for dinner. Parsley and mint in crock pot meals are great and don’t forget them in salads. They add a lovely fresh taste. Of course the traditional Lebanese salad tabouli is mostly made out of these two herbs.

If you get a long tray you could put them all in the one pot. Or you might like to make a collection of small pots with one herb in each. Perhaps you could even decorate the pots. Why not try your hand at folk art or just drawing and painting a simple stencil on each pot? Make sure you allow plenty of time for the paint to dray and fumes to disappear before you put the plant in though.

This is an activity you get even get children involved in. You might make it a family project. Let each child choose a person they want to make their potted gift for. What grandparent or aunt or other family member or neighbor would not appreciate a herb in a pot hand decorated by a special child? It doesn’t have to be great art. It just has to be simple and colorful and shows you have put time and thought into personalizing the gift.
