Many times when I take a picture, I already have in mind what I want to do for the scrapbook page. Sometimes, I even take pictures just because I know it will make a great layout! I also think taking pictures is important for keeping very special memories alive for a long time.
A few years ago, my husband and I, and our daughter, went out to California to see the dairy farm where my Father-in-law grew up. There were eight kids in his family, and he spent a lot of his childhood at a neighbor’s farm working and sleeping there. He has very fond memories of that lifestyle, and it is very much a part of who he is today. My husband had been to this tiny town in California before, but I had never been. I was so excited to see where all of those special memories came from. I was so excited to have my camera.
One of the things my Father-in-law was so proud of was the fact that the fence that he helped build as a child was still there. I can only imagine how satisfying that must of been to take us back there, along with one of his grandchildren, and tell us about building that fence. Of course, I had to pull out my camera and take a picture of him and my husband along that fence.
When I got home, and got around to scrapbooking that page, I knew I wanted a title for it that gave the fence and the memory the respect it deserved. So, I titled the layout, “One Fine Fence”. I wanted that picture to be the only picture on the page. I matted it with paper, and placed it on the coordinating cardstock. To give the page something special that would make it stand out, I decided I would “build a fence” with scrapbook paper. Sometimes, the ideas in my head do not always turn out exactly like I would want, but this one did, and it made me love the page even more!
I cut out 3 long strips of patterned paper that matched the paper behind the photo. Then, I thought it needed a little something more to make it pop. So, I matted that paper with black cardstock. Then, I took the strips of paper, and left one end squared off, and one end I cut at an angle. Then, I took two shorter strips and did the same. I matted them, and cut them the same way that I cut the long strips. Next, I laid the three long strips horizontally as if I was building a fence, then took the two shorter strips and placed them on top of the 3 long ones at each end, vertically. I had built a fence! I took some small round epoxy stickers that were orange, and matched the papers and placed those on the short strips as if they were the nails. I was done!
Last, I added journaling with the date, and I journaled about how special that fence was. The page was complete. It made me happy to make something so special from a memory that was so special to him and to us. And besides, it was in fact, One Fine Fence.
