Go Ahead – You Work From Home

One of the fun things about being a home – based professional is that you can do your work in any way that floats your boat. You do not need anyone else’s permission to structure your work day, your work area, or anything else about your work in a way that inspires or motivates you. If you are not sure what I am getting at, here are a few fun suggestions.

You can dress for work in any way that motivates you. Unless I have a court date, I do my best work in yoga pants and tee shirts. When it is time to go to court, I enjoy getting dolled up in a suit or dress and heels. Some people may find it motivating to wear office attire while others are grateful for the opportunity to go with a more casual look.

You can give yourself treats whenever you like. One of my favorite things to do in the evening while I am working is to have an indulgent snack that I would not consume in front of the kids. We don’t give them much sugar, so things like chocolate, ice cream, cookies and brownies do not make an appearance during the day. This is not a very healthy habit, so I try to keep the portions reasonable. It certainly helps keep my morale and motivation up though.

You can set up your work area any way you wish. Does gazing at an aquarium of tropical fish inspire you? Put your desk near a fish tank or a fish tank near your desk. Plants can create a tranquil space with good air quality. If you enjoy the company of your dog or cat, why not encourage them to join you in your work area by placing a dog or cat bed or blanket in that space. In nice weather, you can take your laptop out on the deck for a while. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

When you work from home you have the freedom to do what inspires and motivates you. What kinds of things do you do during your work day that motivate you? How have you created a work space that inspires you? I would love to know.
