Go Green: Reusable Shopping Bags

Okay, so you’re being extra conscious of the things you use and trying not to waste resources or pollute. That’s great. If we all do just a little we can help make our planet a better place for the generations that follow us. While I’m still not convinced that “the debate is over” when it comes to global warming, I am glad that the discussion has led to less wastefulness. Improvement is always a good thing.

With that in mind, you may regularly come across things that you can do without. What about “paper or plastic?” at your favorite store? Knowing how quickly those bags can accumulate in our own homes, just imagine how many are out there with everyone else using them too. Wow, that’s a lot of bags!

Even if you reuse them, you may still want to decrease the overall number of bags, at least the number you use. A good way to do that is to replace them with reusable shopping bags. You may already have some tote bags or other types that will work, that you can simply fold up and bring along with you to the store.

If you don’t already have something suitable, or don’t have enough bags, there are many different options available. Some stores offer reusable bags near the check out for just a buck or two. You can often find canvas bags or other totes at thrift stores for very little money. Wash them up and put them to use.

Another great idea is to make your own reusable shopping bags, and they’re not hard to make. As you are organizing things around your home, making room for Christmas presents, gather up some old clothing and use it to make shopping bags. You get the bonus of creating reusable shopping bags and recycling old clothing all at once.
