Good News is Green News

I don’t know about you, but I am fed up with the news lately. A zombie apocalypse, child molesters, hate crimes – I just cannot take anymore!

Every day when I check the news (yes, I am a glutton for punishment!), it seems most of the headlines are bad. But, every once in a while, I find some good news. To me, at least in the case of these items, good news is green news. It is stories about people helping out people without wanting any fame or glory for it.

Today, I read that an anonymous casino owner just gave the United Way a $1 million donation. Now there may be some of you that poo-poo this by saying the guy (or gal) made money off people, many of whom cannot afford to be in casinos to begin with. And, I agree with that to a point, but human nature being what it is, some people, even those that can’t afford it, are going to gamble. At least this owner is giving some back to the community. This is the second time this person has donated to the United Way. At Christmas, the monies were from Secret Santa. This time, it was from Summer Santa.

Another good deed done this week was by the car company Ferrari. Northern Italy experienced earthquakes recently and Ferrari did an online auction to raise money for victims. All in all, $3.2 million was raised. A large majority of that money was raised when a 599XX track car was sold to the highest bidder (an American – Jay Leno perhaps?) for almost $1.8 million.

I guess when you shell out that much money, you get a few perks because the car was signed by Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo and F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa and it will be delivered to the new owner at the Italian Grand Prix.

Other items sold include a nose cone from a F60 (I don’t know what that is, but it brought in $29,000) and an engine from a championship winning F2008 (which brought in $100,000).
