When God gives commands there is a good reason for them. Yet how easily people ignore God and what He has said and instructed.
God through Moses gave Israel statutes and commands before they entered the Promised Land. He gave them these instructions, so they would know how to live in the land. He gives us commands and instructions, so we know how to live. We find them in the Bible.
Deuteronomy 4:2 is very clear about not adding to or taking away from what God has said. This is as important for us today as it was for the people of Israel. Yet how many churches and sects want to add to what God has said. They’re not content with what the Bible has to offer, so they add their own bits or rules or extra books to add to it.
Just as bad are those churches which only teach selected truths and do not teach the whole counsel of God. Anything that does not fit in with their preconceived view they discard. There is a real danger in doing this. It implies that we think we know better than God, the Creator who made us. How presumptuous!
In obeying God’s command, Israel would find wisdom, Deuteronomy 4: 6. So will we. That would have an effect to others around. For others would recognize that wisdom.
Israel had a unique relationship with God. We do too. The bible has told us all we need to know of God and His ways. Israel was to teach this to their children and grandchildren. We are to do this too. How are you teaching God’s Word to your children and grandchildren? What are you teaching them about God by the way you live your life? Are you teaching them that God is the answer to all their needs? Or are they seeing that you think God is irrelevant and you only want to follow Him when it suits you. It’s something for each of us to think about.
