Great Books for Spring

robin

We’ve been planting seeds around here, and although there is still sporadic slush falling from the sky, it definitely feels like spring is just around the corner. Here are a few of my favorite spring books to read with preschoolers.

Debbie Ouellett’s How Robin Saved Spring is a lazy bedtime or afternoon book, since it is long. In this book, the seasons are sisters. The winter sister wants the spring sister to sleep forever, so that winter can last forever.

Robins seem to be a popular theme for spring stories. My Spring Robin by Anne Rockwell is one of my favorite animal-oriented books for spring. It’s ideal for younger preschoolers. A little girl searches for the robin that she saw in the garden last year.

Hooray for Spring! is a sweet little book by Kazuo Iwawura. Little squirrels try to figure out how to care for a baby bird.

We enjoy reading Frog and Toad, and one of my all time favorite stories is in the compilation called Frog and Toad All Year. It’s called The Corner. In it, frog describes how his father once told him that spring was just around the corner. He went to look for the corner that spring was just around.

When the Wind Stops by Charlotte Zolotow is a favorite for just about any season. A mother talks to her little boy about changes and how everything cycles around and around. This is perfect for any time of seasonal change, and the pictures are gorgeous, similar to wood cuts.

Mary McKenna Siddals’ Tell Me a Season is excellent for younger preschoolers. It’s a simple book with few words that shows in pictures the colors and activities of each season. Two children play outside their house with a dog as new colors arise for each different season.
