Great Gift Ideas To Honor Breast Cancer Survivors… And Support The Cause

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and my mom is a breast cancer survivor… so in honor of the campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the deadly disease, I have compiled a list of some of my favorite gift ideas designed to support the cause. I call them “my favorite pink products,” (the pink ribbon symbolizes breast cancer awareness).

I take my hat off to Macy’s department store. For years now the company has lent its support to the fight against breast cancer and this year is no exception. Macy’s 2006 “For the Love of Her Life” program is once again raising money in October for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).

The limited edition breast cancer merchandise includes two GUND plush labradoodles, a GUND plush teddy bear (my daughter got both items in honor of my mother’s battle with the disease), and Frango Pink Mint Chocolates. The stuffed animals are being sold in Macy’s Cosmetics departments for $12, with $5.75 from each sale going to BCRF. The labradoodle comes in two colors: “Grace” in gold, and “Courage” in brown. Both wear bandannas printed with the pink ribbon and paw prints, and each dog features the pink ribbon symbol embroidered on one paw. The teddy bear is also being sold for $12, with $4.25 from each sale going to BCRF. The “Hope” bear wears a pink hoodie and also features the pink ribbon embroidery on one paw. The limited edition Frango Pink Mint Chocolates are on sale for $8, with 50 cents going to BCRF. The mints come in a 1/3-pound box featuring a design by Miranda Moss, a Minneapolis artist and cancer survivor.

But that’s not all, to further support BCRF, Macy’s is also carrying Estée Lauder’s Pink Ribbon cosmetics, Lalique’s vintage vase, and Karen Neuberger’s Pink Ribbon Signature Collection, which includes pajamas, slippers and socks. Other beauty products sold at Macy’s that benefit BCRF include: Bobbi Brown’s Pink Collection; Clinique’s In the Pink lipstick, Origins Flower Fusion; Prescriptives’ Pink collection.

But, really the aforementioned products are just the tip of the iceberg. Macy’s has a slew of “pink products,” whose profits will go to help in the battle against the disease. From pink Kitchen Aid mixers and pink irons, to pink bowls and pink spoons, the pink items are seemingly endless. To see the entire selection of limited edition breast cancer products click here.

Macy’s is not the only company selling “pink products.” Polaroid has designed a pink digital camera, which retails for $150. The company is donating $60,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and launching this pink line of cameras to raise awareness.

Not into cameras? Then consider purchasing a White + Warren pink cashmere cable hoddie, which sells for about $275. Fifty percent of the proceeds will be donated to Women at Risk. Or, if you live in a place that doesn’t get chilly, check out a pair of Honeydew Rumba shorts, which sells for $16. Nine dollars from each sale of the limited-edition shorts will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

All of the pink items are great gift ideas for someone you know who may be a breast cancer survivor or someone who has recently been diagnosed with the disease. You could also purchase several “pink products” now and store them away until the holidays. When it’s time to exchange gifts, hand them out to your loved ones with a note explaining how each is helping in the fight to stamp out breast cancer. Happy Shopping!
