Great Ways to Cut Food Costs (2)

Frugal living is a lifestyle, and should be implemented into all aspects of your life. Yes, even food. Here are some more tips to help you reduce your monthly food costs and help you save both time and money!

  • Learn how to use leftovers in recipes. Here is a great article with a few recipes and here is another one.
  • When using your oven for cooking, try to bake more than one dish at a time. You might need to add a couple more minutes, but it’s better than having to waste energy by reheating an oven multiple times.
  • You can make your own convenience food. Don’t waste money on the containers these items come in. Purchase inexpensive, disposable storage containers and create small snack size versions of applesauce, fruit cocktail, chips and other snacks. You will wind up saving a bundle if you purchase these items in larger containers and make them convenient yourself.
  • Use coupons and try to shop places that double your coupon! Many grocery stores offer double coupon weeks. This can significantly reduce your food costs. Also playing something like the Grocery Game can also help reduce your cost.
  • When you are faced with leftovers or you have opened something, be sure and wrap and seal the foods carefully so there is no waste involved. If you take the time to store your foods properly, you will not be faced with bad or moldy foods.
  • You can make a hamburger go much further by adding in bread crumbs, or oatmeal. It doesn’t change the taste (maybe the texture) and you can use it to make anything you would normally put hamburger in. (including an actual hamburger!)
  • Try to prepare less meat during the week. Meat is an extremely expensive food. Try Italian, Mexican and Oriental recipes to create meals at a lower cost. Most of these foods require inexpensive items such as beans, noodles, peanut butter and frozen veggies.
