Green Hardwood Floor Cleaners

Bed Bath and Beyond is having a heavily-advertised sale (see: my email inbox is crammed with alerts) on Bona cleaners. For $30 you can get the Bona Hardwood Floor Care System in a neat little eco-friendly bag.

The bag contains everything needed for easy and environmentally safe cleaning of hardwood floors, including Bona’s Swedish Formula Hardwood Floor Cleaner, a specifically formulated mixture designed to clean all polyurethane finished wood floors and factory pre-finished wood floors. You also get the Bona Microfiber Mop, which features an easy to maneuver swivel head and the Bona Microfiber Cleaning Pad, which can be washed up to 300 times. Last, but not least, your $30 kit also comes with the Bona Microfiber Dusting Pad that is designed for dry dusting on hardwood and stone, tile and laminate floors.

It’s not a bad deal considering all of the products are “green,” which typically translates into you having to shell out more green to get the goods. Bona cleaners are non-toxic waterborne solutions that are safe for homes with children and pets. Plus, they are certified for indoor air quality.

Bona has a ton of cleaning accessories for hardwood floor care, though its best sellers are its cleaners and polishes. You can purchase a set that includes one 34-ounce spray bottle of Bona hardwood floor cleaner, one 64-ounce refill for the spray bottle, and one 32-ounce squeeze bottle of Bona hardwood floor polish, for less than $30. The cleaners are designed to work in conjunction with the Bona mop that comes with three microfiber mop pads for specialized jobs. One pad dusts, one pad cleans and one pad acts as an applicator for polish.

Naturally, you don’t have to buy Bona products to clean your hardwood floors. If your wood floors are not filthy, then the quickest and most effective way to spruce them up is with a damp mop. Just remember to gently sweep up all surface dust from the floor before you hit it with a damp mop. Also, you don’t want to sweep up large piece of dirt and debris. Rather, pick them up with your hands so you don’t scratch or scour your floor’s finish during the sweeping or mopping process. Finally, remember that mopping is not an option unless your hardwood floor is properly finished with polyurethane or another penetrating seal. Saturating wood floors with water or liquid cleaners can cause warping and other major problems.
