There’s a good discussion going on over the use of coupons and whether they’re worth it. It’s easy to say “They are,” but without any evidence, it’s not a very worthwhile statement. I did the grocery shopping today, and thought I’d share some of the deals I found in the stores. Sometimes the deals are regionally-specific, but hopefully most will apply to you, too.
My first stop was Safeway. I knew from their ad that they had grapes on sale at a buck a pound. That’s a very good price here in the Northwest. I also up some boneless skinless chicken breasts for $1.99/lb. That’s pretty much unbeatable. We had Japanese exchange students here last week and they showed me how to make Yakitori (teriyaki chicken grilled on skewers). I’ve been itching to get it on the grill. The best find for me, though, was Fresh Express salad on a Buy One, Get One Free. Those of you who live in areas where produce is inexpensive won’t appreciate it as much, but for us, it’s worth buying the salad packs. Otherwise, we end up with a lot of brown and wilted lettuce. Right there on the cooler shelf was a coupon for $2 off when you buy a salad and a Hillshire Farms specialty salad. The Hillshire Farms ones were marked down to $1.99. I ended up with two Chicken Caesar Salads (great for dh’s lunch!) and two family salads for $3.27.
Also on the shelf were coupons for $1 off Oscar Meyer Deli Creations Sandwiches. These are microwavable hot sandwich melts that are also good to put in the lunch bag. Anything that saves me time is good! They’re normally $2.99, but are on sale this week 2/$4. With the $1 coupon from the shelf, they’re only a dollar apiece. I love the blinkie displays. Even if an item is too high priced, if it’s something I’ll use, I take a couple of coupons in the hopes that I’ll find them cheaper elsewhere.
I don’t drink Coke Zero, but there was a deal that was just too good to pass up. It’s not advertised, but I checked with two other people in different areas and it’s there, too. On the 12-packs: Buy 2, Get 3 free — that deal is for other Coke products, too. But the Coke Zero has $1.50 off peelies on them. I paid $3.50 for five 12-packs. They’ll sit in my garage until we use them for Mentos magic or there’s a potluck.
A small basket full of bargains put into my insulated bags and I was off to cross the street to QFC.
