Gross, Dust Mites!

A little dust never hurt anyone. Have you heard someone say that or perhaps you have uttered those same words?

The problem with this line of thinking is that we are forgetting something very important. Dust isn’t just an unpleasant part of a home, or a nuisance to take care of. It is a microscopic bug.

Doesn’t that just crawl under your skin?

Puts things in a new perspective, doesn’t it? Dust mites can be found throughout the home. And not just in the dusty corners of your room, but they can live in your mattress, carpet and furniture.

What do they eat? Dander from our pets and skin that we shed. Gross, huh?

Here’s something else that might change your thinking about dust. The average mattress contains tens of thousands of these little critters. Just makes you want to slink under your covers right now, hey?

The good news is that they don’t have to overtake your home. You can control some of its population.

The biggest way you can do this is by washing your sheets and pillowcases every week. Make sure you use hot water.

Keeping up on your home can also reduce dust mites. That means regularly cleaning and eliminating dust.

If you have carpeting, vacuum frequently. HEPA vacuums are the best at capturing dust mites and other particles.

Hardwood floors can significantly eliminate the number of dust mites you have. But even then, you will need to regularly sweep to get rid of dust.

Using a microfiber cloth will capture dust much better than expensive furniture polish and a rag. All that usually does is swipe it onto the floor.

Also, make sure you use a high-efficiency air filter and consider investing in an air purifier. These are just some of the ways you can at least reduce dust mites.
