Growing Green Kids

left

Earth Day 2012 kicks off in just a few hours. How are you planning to celebrate?

Contrary to popular belief, the special occasion is not only commemorated by tree huggers and granola lovers. Rather, these days, Earth Day organizers are targeting tech-obsessed kids in hopes of inspiring a new generation to go green.

In some parts of the world parents are being encouraged to get their kids to give up their favorite electronic devices for the day, and instead turn their attention to preserving the earth’s natural resources such as air, water, plants and animals.

This, of course, is easier said than done, especially if your kid spends the bulk of his day hogging energy by watching TV, playing video games or constantly updating his Facebook page. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to honor the planet on Sunday regardless of how old or resistant your child may be.

For starters you could have your children walk through your home shutting off power to items that you can live without for a day. In addition, consider making a list of ways you can conserve water, such as turning off the faucet during teeth brushing or taking a shorter shower.

If you have younger children, spend Earth Day communing with Mother Nature. If weather permits, consider planting a vegetable garden, or at the very least, a few flowers. For city slickers, who don’t have access to a yard, plant some seeds in a small pot or flower box, and then give your child the task of watering the burgeoning greens.

Visiting the zoo is another fun Earth Day adventure. However, instead of just waving at the animals as you walk by their habitats, do some research and teach your children details about the different species you encounter. If you don’t live near a zoo, then simply head outside and stroll around your neighborhood. Look for birds building nests and baby animals being born. Or, bring along a magnifying glass or bug collecting kit and have your kids hunt for insects.
