It can be a hard as a Christian when someone you love has not accepted Jesus’ gift to us which is salvation. Unless the person has really hit rock bottom, it’s less likely they will be open to being preached to–however, this doesn’t mean the seeds you sow in their life will be in vain. Not being able to have your loved one share in your joy can be disheartening.
“Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.” (Galatians 6:1)
You may have a heart to want to help your loved one in their time of need. This can be a wonderful witnessing opportunity. It’s important that you stay grounded in the Lord so that you don’t fall into the things that have over taken them-—if that is a possibility.
In Philippians it tells us in chapter 2 to do all things without complaining and disputing. We are to shine. How your light shines can have a large impact on your loved one who may be watching your ways when you don’t realize it. Colossians 4:5-6 reminds us to be wise toward those who aren’t believers and for our speech to be with grace. We should have the answers to why we believe what we do.
Finding common ground is a good way to gain the respect of your loved one. If a person feels condemned by you, likely they are going to feel pushed away and even rebellious toward God. By finding areas that you can agree on not only shows that you are human and you love them, but you are modeling Christ. Christ gained unlikely followers. He didn’t just wait for opportunities to speak in the temples. He met men and women at their level whether they were wounded or shunned, He touched their lives. Think about it for a second; God came and met us here on earth right where we are and lived amongst sinners!
I leave you with this next verse in hopes of encouraging you:
“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” (Galatians 6:9)
