Too often in society and even in many of today’s churches, we don’t hear all that much about judgment. It’s something people don’t want to think about much less hear about. But the bible is very clear that though God is a God of love and grace, He is also a god of judgment. We cannot ignore that fact. We can try, but it won’t change the facts.
Isaiah is a book that has a lot about God’s judgment. Some of it is judgment of other nations. Some concerns judgment of His own people.
Isaiah 30 is a passage that shows both sides of God’s character. Verse 1 is a warning to stay in tune with God and in step with His plans. Too often we want to try and make our own decisions without consulting God. The reality is that when we do things off our own bat, they often don’t work out as we expect, but end up a disaster. When we were thinking of moving here we needed to make sure that it was not just what we wanted but what God wanted. He made it very clear to us and there is no doubt we are in the right place where He wants us, even though that means not being as close to family as we would like and at times that can be hard.
God can’t stress enough the importance of listening to Him and letting Him instruct us. We can’t do that unless we actually spend time with him in prayer and reading His Word.
Sometimes people don’t want to hear the hard truths and sometimes people don’t want to hear about God either, Isaiah 30:11. Yet God says ‘in repentance and rest you shall be saved,’ Isaiah 30:15. Notice the repentance has to come before the rest. ‘In quietness and trust is your strength.’ Not maybe, not could be, but ‘is your strength.’
