In a previous blog I touched on moms, sacrifices, and the holidays. Moms (in general) are notorious for knowing exactly what’s on everyone else’s Christmas wish list while never considering drafting one of their own.
So why is it that mothers have such a difficult time coming up with a holiday wish list?
I can’t speak for other moms, but I would venture to guess:
A.) They’d rather spend the money on their children
B.) They don’t have a ton of free time to enjoy
leisure pursuits, therefore they don’t need a bunch of “toys”
C.) They’d prefer their loved ones would just know what they want, without having to write it down.
Option C might just be a “girl thing” (or at the very least, wishful thinking), but it’s safe to say in most cases it would probably take a Christmas miracle to achieve.
Look, I’m not saying that being a mom automatically makes one a saint, but the fact remains that moms (and yes, some dads too) typically put the needs of others ahead of their own. Which is not to say that we would turn down diamond earrings, it’s just that I don’t know many moms who would actually ask for holiday bling.
On the other hand, buying gifts for moms can be tricky.
I know one mom who outlawed all gifts that come with attached cords after her husband bought her a new vacuum one Christmas. He thought it was the perfect gift since his wife was always complaining that the old one lacked suction. Frankly, I would be thrilled to get a new vacuum for Christmas, but I understand her disappointment. I’m sure she would have much rather had her husband gift her with his presence behind the vacuum (or other household appliance) or present her with a gift card from Merry Maids or a day at the spa so she could take a break from vacuuming.
Bottom line: Ask a mom what she wants for Christmas this year and I bet you anything her humble request would be a peaceful day with family… and a break from doing the dishes… and the laundry… and the dusting… and the mediating of fighting kids… and the mopping… and the toy removal from the staircase… and…
