Hiking Tips

Considering a day of hiking or a hiking trip? Planning is essential to the successful and rewarding hiking trip. While your hiking may be in a local area, many hiking trips will take you away from populated areas. So you have to plan for the idea that assistance will not be readily available.

Start by mapping out where you plan to hike. Whether you are planning a half-day, daylong or several day hike – mapping your hike will help you plan your supply list as well as being able to leave word with someone so they know where to look if necessary.

If you are planning a multi-day hike, stick to an identified trail such as the Appalachian Trail. They are well marked, feature many campsites along the way and it’s a challenging hike that doesn’t invite you to get lost.

Some of the more popular hiking areas often have their information on line. So you can spend some time doing research before you head out. Make plans to check in with any ranger stations you may encounter along your trip. Carry a phone and if possible check in with a relative nightly to let them know you are safe.

Carry a first aid kit, any medication you may require and be sure to carry plenty of water and power bars or easy to eat food. During your map planning stage, make provisions for alternate routes – either to end a trip early or to go around unexpected obstacles.

Before planning any kind of extensive hiking trip, be sure you are in shape. You may want to do a few half-day hikes ahead of time in order to build up your endurance. The idea of regular exercise and being in shape may not prepare you for walking steadily for hours at a time over uneven terrain. So give yourself time to adjust.

If you employ solid safety measures, planning and maintain healthy activity ahead of time, you should enjoy your hiking trip!
