Holidays and Family Schedules

Wow! There is so much to do, not only to get ready for various holidays, but also the various events throughout the holiday season. There are informal get-togethers with friends and colleagues, community events, school plays, pageants, and more! It can be enough to run even the most organized family ragged, trying to squeeze everything in.

That’s why planning is essential. Writing everything down, complete with dates and times, will help you get a much better grasp of the situation. You’ll be able to easily see where conflicts in scheduling may arise, in advance, so you can plan and rearrange if necessary.

Holiday CalendarSit down with your family and ask about events each person would like to participate in. Print off or draw up a large calendar, or pick up one of those extra large desk blotter calendars for easy viewing. Write every event on the calendar and hang it in a prominent place. Family members can add to it as new things arise. It’s a lot harder to miss something or to let it slip your mind with a large calendar in view. However, sometimes after we get used to something being there, we begin to ignore it. So, take care to check the calendar regularly and encourage others to do so as well.

Encourage everyone to write down their events as soon as they are made aware of them. This way, you’ll have a better chance of making sure everyone gets equal time, or as close to it as possible. Be sure to add other reminders, such as the date you need to send off holiday cards or start working on costumes for the Thanksgiving special at school or the Christmas pageant at church.

Looking at the big picture and making adjustments in advance can help things go more smoothly during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
