This home – based business idea is dedicated to my almost three year old son, Dylan. Earlier this month, we borrowed a Mighty Machines DVD from the library. From the first time he watched it, Dylan was fascinated by the excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment that were featured in the stories on the DVD. If you love heavy equipment and have the skills and license to operate it, you could start your own excavation or dump truck business.
Of course, this is a home – based business which requires an up front investment. Not many people have heavy equipment just sitting around in their yard. Fortunately, used equipment is available and you can look around until you find something that will enable you to perform the types of services that you want to offer to your customers. Don’t forget that whatever excavation equipment you choose will have to be transported to your job sites, so make sure that you have vehicles that can transport it. Even better, try to find equipment that is being sold together with a truck and trailer. A dump truck business is a bit easier since you can start out with just one thing – a dump truck.
Since you will be investing quite a bit of money to start your excavation or dump truck business, be sure to research local rules and regulations governing this type of business. Don’t forget to check out zoning regulations to make sure that you can keep your equipment on your property without breaking any rules. Draft a business plan so that you can be sure that you have all of the details covered.
Once you have a few customers lined up, get digging. As you go along, find easy and effective ways to promote your work such as lawn signs and business cards. With any luck, you will dig or dump your way to a successful home – based business.
