Homeschool Glossary (words homeschoolers should know) – C

Charlotte Mason Method– The Charlotte Mason Method of homeschooling is a books based approach to learning. Children learn to love reading good books and original sources of information. They also spend a lot of time in nature.

Classical Education – (also called trivium-based education) is a history-based approach to education with three developmental phases. In the early or primary years, the children are taught facts. In the middle school years, children learn logic and reasoning. In the final high school period, children learn persuasion and abstraction.

College admission: Once your child is in middle school, you will want to start thinking about college admission and the requirements your preferred colleges may have.

Compulsory Attendance/Education – Each state has a compulsory education law that sets the mandatory ages during which a child must receive formal education. For example, a state may require a child age 6 – 17 to be in school.

Cooperative (Co-Op) – A co-op exists when a group of people band together to achieve the common goal of homeschooling the children of all the families collectively. In a Co-Op situation, each parent teaches the group according to his or her own strength.

Core Subjects: The core subjects are the main subject matter that a child must learn. The core subjects are English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign language, civics and government (political science), economics, the arts, history, and geography.

Correspondence Courses – Correspondence courses are classes taught outside the classroom to people in their own homes. This can be done through brochures and written material or online.

Cover School – A cover school (also known as an umbrella school) is a “school” under which homeschoolers can operate. Although the work is done at home, recordkeeping is done by the school.

Critical Thinking – Critical thinking is a method of education where you get a child to determining or figure out an answer instead of memorizing. A child will be able to determining an answer and explain why they came to that answer.

CurriculumCurriculum is the materials used to teach students. This can include online materials, books, worksheets, lessons plans, and more.

Cyber schools: Cyber schools are also online schools. There are both private and public online schools.
