Homeschool Glossary (words homeschoolers should know) – P-R

PACE – (also called (Paces) is a curriculum type associated with the curriculum material published by the School of Tomorrow, also known as Accelerated Christian Education. The curriculum is broken down into bite size work texts (combination of workbook and textbooks), usually 12 per course per year. These smaller workbooks will give the child a sense of accomplishment as they complete each section while making it apparent how much work still has to be done. This will help the child to keep on track though many accelerate faster using this type of program.

Part-time homeschooling – Part time homeschooling is akin to supplementing a child’s education while they are still attending public or private schools.

PhonicsPhonics is a method of teaching a child to read by learning the sounds of each letter and sounding them out to form words.

Portfolio – A portfolio is collection of a child’s work that demonstrates what he or she has learned. Included in the portfolio includes reading logs, completed assignments and projects, awards, certificates of completion, writing samples and more. A portfolio can be complied online, in boxes, or even scrapbooks. A portfolio can be used in lieu of a standardized exam in some states, and most colleges accept a portfolio in lieu of a high school diploma.

Problem solving – Problem solving is a method of learning where students evaluate the problem and discover the answer. This is also called critical thinking. Problem solving leads to permanent information retention and is the opposite of memorization where information is often forgotten after testing.

Restrictive support groups – Restrictive support groups are homeschool support groups that accept only certain types of people. There are Christian (and other religion) support groups where members must sign a belief statement as well as African American (and other ethnicity) support groups for people who are, or are homeschooling African American Children.
