Homeschoolers suspicious of Arne Duncan, the new Secretary of Education

It figures. Considering that the vast majority of homeschoolers are anti-Obama, it is not shocking that his pick of a fellow Chicagoan, and buddy as the Secretary of Education would be viewed with suspicion.

I spent some time perusing the internet searching for some connection to Duncan and any mention of homeschooling and found nothing. I did however, find a few opinions by homeschoolers as to our chances with him in office.

Spunkyhomeschool, probably the most popular homeschooling blog online and definitely one of influence pointed out Arne Duncan’s recommendation of a high school for gay students. She also questions motives behind requirements for students to participate in community service.

(What does this have to do with homeschooling? It depends on your reason for homeschooling.)

Leestranahan, an unschooling parent, seems concerned over more educational regulations. His kid excelled with unschooling, spent a few years in public school including being bumped up to advanced placement classes and honors programs, went back to unschooling and started community college courses at 16. The fear is that more testing will be required which would eliminate the freedoms of this family to leave their kid alone and let him learn.

TxSkirt, another homeschool mom who calls herself “a chick with a keyboard and an opinion” ticks off issues such as his advocating for gun control, 24/7 schools (which I do find a little creepy), gay friendly schools, the fact that we was educated in private school and went to Harvard, and the fact that there are parents and teachers who don’t like his changes.

Rosebughive40, isn’t necessarily worried as Obama’s campaign made assurances that he was open to homeschooling. Still, she recommends joining the HSLDA just in case.
