Homestrology

You’ve heard of astrology, well, what about, homestrology? Interior designers say it is becoming the new trend in home décor. To prove it 12 designers took 12 blank rooms at a recent California home show and transformed each into a space they thought would appeal to each sign of the Zodiac.

The designers were challenged to use simple fabrics and styles to create a room that would reflect the personality of each astrological sign. The hope was that ordinary homeowners (like me) would be inspired to implement the same renovations in their own homes.

I was born in August, so naturally I was drawn to the Leo bedroom. The walls of the room were painted a bold, rich red and on one of the walls hung a huge mural of, what else, a lion. The other walls showcased an African safari retreat meant to pay homage to the king of the jungle. The bed frame was made of wrought iron, which I am guessing was to symbolize a lion’s tough exterior.

There were two other red rooms—one designed for Scorpios, and the other for fiery Aries. The Scorpio room featured items that reflected passion, mystery, and romance (traits of someone born under that sign), including soft, flowing window treatments, overstuffed couches and a pair of red chaise lounges. The Aries room featured vintage furniture to cater to the ram’s strong style.

The Sagittarius room had lavender walls, which were accented by wicker furniture and teak accessories. The items were meant to represent travel, since Sagittarians are known for their love of travel.
The Virgo room was painted in a pale green for the earth sign. The room was accented with touches of the harvest (which Virgo rules) in the form of apples and pears. The accessories helped to offset the centerpiece of the room—a massive chocolate-colored leather sofa.

One of the most intriguingly designed rooms was the Pisces room. The water sign bedroom featured turquoise walls and an Asian theme. The king-size bed’s frame held a mattress that sat just inches from the floor and the comforter was covered with a fire engine red duvet. Meanwhile, a pair of miniature red secretaries flanked the bed.

While I don’t think I will begin remodeling my home in the spirit of the king of the jungle, I did find some of the ideas interesting and perhaps I can find a way to incorporate a few of them in to my existing floor plan. What about you? Do you think homestrology is in the cards for your next decorating re-do?
