Hot Tub Safety

Much to my delight, the hot tub at my apartment complex is open all year. I’ve been walking over about once a week for a warm, steamy soak… and I love it! But a hot tub can be dangerous if you aren’t careful.

The main hazard with hot tubs and spas is drowning — just like any body of water. Make sure you know the depth of your hot tub before you head in. Don’t jump into a hot tub — they aren’t made for jumping and diving. It’s safest to tub with a buddy, rather than alone. When you aren’t using your hot tub or spa, keep a locking safety cover in place. The apartment complex has the hot tub in a separate, locking room — nobody can get in when the office is closed.

Hair and body part entrapment is another danger with hot tubs. Uncovered drains can suck up hair and/or body parts, trapping bathers under the water. Standard drain covers on your hot tub drains can prevent drowning due to hair or body part entrapment. If you aren’t sure whether your drains are safe, a pool/spa professional can inspect your tub for safety. Having each pump use multiple outlets is another way to reduce suction and reduce the risk of hair or body part entrapment. Newer spas have multiple drains; older spas may need dome-shaped safety covers for drains.

Know where the cut-off switch is for your hot tub pump in case of emergency, like hair or body part entrapment.

Temperature is another concern with hot tubs and spas. The water temperature should not exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit at any time. Extremely hot water — 110 degrees Fahrenheit and above — can cause health issues. High water temperatures can cause drowsiness. If you nod off in the hot tub, you risk drowning. High water temperatures can raise body temperatures, raising your risk of heat stroke.

For most healthy adults and teens, hot tubs can be safe and relaxing. Pregnant women and young children should consult a doctor before using a hot tub or spa.
