How Can A Freelance Writer Create Steady Income?

Freelance writing is a wonderful home – based business opportunity. Like any other business opportunity, it has its benefits and its drawbacks. One of the most challenging things about being a freelance writer is that it can be hard to earn a steady income.

Fortunately, it is possible to have at least some regular income as a freelance writer if you are able to find a client that needs work on an ongoing basis. Blogs are just one type of assignment where a client may ask you to write a certain number of posts each week or each month, for an indefinite amount of time. Some clients need articles, product descriptions, data entry, or other tasks performed at regular intervals.

When you are bidding on writing projects, it is possible that the project description will mention that the work is ongoing. Other projects may seem like a short term commitment, and then later develop into a situation where you provide similar or different services for that same client after the initial work is complete. Do be aware that some project descriptions offer up a small project with the promise of additional work “if the client likes your work”. Sometimes these offers are legitimate, and more work does come after the initial assignment but sometimes there is not a good fit between you and the client and they decide not to offer any more work. Occasionally, you will find that a client really just put the language about additional work into the description to entice more and better writers to bid on their small, low budget project.

The best way to attract and keep long term clients is to do your best work, on time every time and to approach every business relationship as a relationship which has the potential to become a long term one. No matter what the project, how large or how small, if you accept an offer of work from a client it is an opportunity for you to let your talent shine. They may not have thought that they would need anything besides the work that they originally advertised, but things can and do change. If you are at the top of your clients’ minds because of the great work that you do, you may find yourself in the wonderful position of hearing from them while you are finishing up their project or even months after you submitted your last assignment. Working to cultivate good business relationships with your clients is always a good thing, and it can sometimes even lead to more work after the initial project has been completed.
