How Couples Communicate

Communication is a very important part of a relationship. As many past articles will tell you, it is important for partners to share their feelings with one another. Being clear on your expectations and being open with one another is a key element in relationship survival. How a couple communicates is not near as important as the fact that some communication takes place.

There are many different ways that a couple can communicate. In most relationship both verbal and nonverbal communication takes place. The most common way to communicate is verbally through words. Couples express their emotions and ideas through the things that they say to one another.

Couples also share feelings and communicate through facial expressions. Most partners can tell the type of day that their mate had from the moment that they walk into the day just from the look on his or her face. Facial expression can also tell a lot about how your partner feels when you bring up a topic. Some facial expressions can let you know when your partner is lying or avoiding telling you something.

Partners also communicate through body language. The touch that you receive from your mate can express love to you much more deeply than the words “I love you”. You can tell when your mate is bothered by something or when there is distance between the two of you due to the coldness of the touch.

In many cases, nonverbal communication is more of an indicator of true feelings than verbal communication. Most of the types of nonverbal communication listed above are types of involuntarily communicating your feelings. Touches and facial expressions tend to come across without thought. They simply follow your mood or tone. However, words can more easily tell lies.

Although talking to your spouse is very important, also check to see what types of signals you and your mate are sending when nonverbal communication is taking place.
