How Fat Are You Really?

I made an interesting discovery while at the gym today. I met with a personal trainer (complimentary session) who discussed some goals with me, did some fitness testing, targeted areas of concern, matched them up with some other data from testing (weight, body fat tests…) and gave me a plan outline for me to follow on my journey to the healthier me.

Over a week ago when I began my new life, I figured I had about one-hundred pounds to lose. I’d done simple on-line calculators that gave me a “healthy weight range” only to find out today, even at five feet two inches tall, I need to be heavier than those charts suggest! At zero percent body weight, I’d be at one-hundred twenty-three pounds. I need to be heavier than that. Based on my percentage of body fat, in order to fall back in the average range (I’m currently in “high-risk”), I only have a minimum of thirty-six pounds to lose.

I wonder if there are others like me who have initially sought a goal that wasn’t actually healthy for them? One-hundred pounds is a lot to lose and one that many would see as near impossible and might not even want to try. Thirty-six to eighty pounds I can do!

Another interesting thing I learned was the amount of calories I take in need to be about twelve-hundred rather than what the nutrition facts section on packages state (“based on a 2,000 calorie diet”). I was shocked to learn that I’m eating a tad over fourteen-hundred calories to maintain my current weight! I also found out that not eating enough calories per day can actually cause me to gain weight since my body might think it’s starving, and therefore storing up fat.

I encourage any dieters out there to seek out a local gym and see if there are any specials running. Check and see if there are opportunities for a complimentary personal training session. Every body is so unique. Your weight-loss goal might not actually be as far away as you think.
