Altered Art: How to Alter a CD Container

Everyone is into altering items these days, but for a scrapbooker it is a creative outlet and a use for all those supplies that collect dust. Are you interested in altering a CD container or case and unsure of how to get started? This article will show you how to alter a CD container.

To get started, you will need both a CD container as well as the paper you plan to cover it in. You can choose to use only one pattern, or you can do what I did in this project and use several for different areas of the case. The finished product will show this off a bit more.

Step 1: Set the CD container over the paper. I am using an 8×8 sheet in my example, but you might choose to use a larger piece such as 12×12 if you want to cover the entire case in one color. Now, you are going to begin the wrapping process. It will be somewhat like wrapping a gift, with a few extra steps. You will need to watch how you place the paper because you are going to want to be sure it will cover the parts you are looking to cover. For instance if you are doing this with several coordinating pieces, you will have a beginning spot and ending spot for each paper. Be sure that the paper lies exactly where you want it to.

Step 2: You will now need to use your scissors to cut the corners in diagonally. This makes folding it easier. It is not a necessary step, but will make the end result look much better.

Step 3: Now it’s time to glue the paper in place. You can choose any type of glue that you want, however I will tell you that I have the best results from Modge Podge or another type of decoupage glue. This gives the finished result a shiny appearance and it can go anywhere on the paper, both sides, to dry clear.

Side note: Feel free to snip off any unnecessary pieces during the covering process. The will eliminate bulk or thick spots on your finished project.

Once you have completely covered the entire box in paper, it is time to get ready to start embellishing. Please see the next article: Embellishing Your Altered CD Container.
