Choosing Christmas lights used to be pretty simple. You simply went to the hardware store and purchased the number of strands that you needed to cover your tree, not exceeding the limit of how many could be plugged into one outlet. Let us start with incandescent versus LED lights, since you can usually choose among either of these options for most of your lighting needs (although some types of lights do tend to be one or the other).
There are pros and cons to both sides. Obviously, LED light are more energy efficient and tend to be more durable, since they use plastic instead of glass for the “bulbs.” They can also reduce the the risk of fire, since they are always cool to the touch and use less power.
On the other hand, LED lights can take some getting used to, if you are most used to incandescent lights. The look of the light is usually different, although high quality LED lights can get pretty close. The best thing to do is to weigh the considerations and see the differences in person before you make your decision.
Next, consider where you will be using your lights. Will they be used inside or outside? Many string light sets can be used in both places, but you do have other options, such as net lights and other specialty lights. New technology and designs make it easy to find something that is perfect for your needs, but if you want the flexibility to have different displays or trees in the future, stick with string lights. They are more adaptable.
You’ll also have to decide if you want multicolored lights or white lights. While you can certain mix and match them, a more coherent display will generally have one type or another. White light (or clear lights) have been the trend for many years now, although some LED lights look better in multi-colors.
