How to deal With Clutter in a Day

Is your life cluttered with things that take up chunks of time but have no eternal value? How much of your time should be devoted to things like hobbies, household chores etc and how much of us spent on those things that have eternal value? Sure we’ve all heard about the person who is so heavenly minded they are no earthly use. So how much time should we devote to each?

Yesterday we looked at habits and sins that clutter our lives and how to deal with them. Are their activities that clutter your life that you need to get rid of?

Take a few moments to write down what your average day is like e.g. time spent in godly pursuits such as bible study, prayer, ministry, time in work and household chores like shopping, cleaning, making meals, time sleeping, time spent watching TV, time for hobbies, time spent on relationships, time on the internet and emails, time reading magazines or books. Those of us who are writers are lucky when it comes to this last couple as we can sometimes credit that reading and internet time as work or research. Yes, I am smiling as I write this. We can always justify our actions can’t we? And yes, some of these activities will overlap.

Jesus is our model. Though he spent much of his time preaching and healing and in prayer, he still had time for people, time to enjoy being at a wedding, John 2:1-11. Yes it turned into an opportunity for ministry and a miracle but it appears originally it was intended simply as a social occasion.

We can’t get rid of clutter in our life unless we know how we spend our time. Not for one minute, am I suggesting we don’t need time with family and friends or just to relax in front of the box or doing whatever else we enjoy. We cannot fill our whole days with work and with godly pursuits.

When you have a clear picture of what your average day looks like, bring it before the Lord in prayer and ask Him if there is anything that needs changing or anywhere where you need to reduce the clutter in your life.
