How to Save Money on Video Games

save money on video games How much do you spend per year on video games and video game systems? With new technology and new games coming out practically every day, it is easy to spend more money on video games than you might think.

Most video games cost between $20 and $40. If you have just ten games, they could have cost you up to $400! The systems themselves cost another couple of hundred. Most households do have more than 10 games, plus they have more than one video game system, making the cost even higher. Wow–that sort of slaps you in the face, doesn’t it.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to give up new games or video games at all. There are several ways to get them cheaply or even for free. Here are several tips and tricks that you can use to get free or cheap video games.

Five Below

If you have a Five Below store near you, check them out for $5 video games even on the latest systems. They won’t be the hottest games, but you’ll still get a lot of play value for the price.

Replay Value

Speaking of play value, be very selective when you purchase a video game to make sure that it has a lot of replay value and that it will keep you interested for a long time. Do your research and read the reviews to make sure that the price of the game will cover many hours of play. Take the time to really master the game and explore all of it before getting a new one.

The Library

Did you know that many local libraries lend out video games for the current systems? It is true. You can generally borrow a game for a week or two. This is a great way to try out new games without having to purchase them!

Wait to Play

When a game comes out, it is often at its highest price. Wait a few weeks or months and the price may drop down. I know that it is very tempting to run out and get a game as soon as comes out, but you’ll be paying a premium for that privilege. A good example is the game “Epic Mickey.” It once cost $49.99 and is now down to $17.99 retail price.

Buy Used

Gamestop offers plenty of used video games for less than new. You can save quite a bit this way, especially if you buy lots of games.

Another place to try is yard sales and outgrown sales. We picked up some video games that my son wanted for only for $2 each. In the store, they cost $30 each.

So you see, you can save money on video games and still enjoy the fun of playing.
